Biography of Italo Campanini

Italo Campanini was an Italian opera singer, known as one of the most successful, talented, hardworking, and versatile Italian tenors. He was born in 1845 in Parma, Italy. He studied singing at the Parma Conservatory and made his operatic debut in 1869 in Odessa, Ukraine, performing the role of Manrico in 'The Troubadour'.

After returning to Italy, Campanini continued to refine his operatic skills under the guidance of Francesco Lamperti and eventually gained recognition as an exceptionally talented lyric tenor. In 1871, he started performing actively in Bologna, and his first major success came with the Italian premiere of 'Lohengrin'.

From 1872 onwards, Campanini embarked on tours in England, North America, and Russia, which soon brought him worldwide fame. He was later hailed as "one of the outstanding representatives of Italian bel canto." During his time in New York, he had the opportunity to work with renowned opera stars such as Annie Louise Cary, Christine Nilsson, and Giuseppe Del Puente.

Campanini's career peaked between 1871 and 1874, and he concluded his performances in 1894. In 1878-79, he embarked on a major tour in the United States and England organized by his impresario J. H. Mapleson, where he served as the leading tenor of the troupe.

However, the early 1880s saw the collapse of Mapleson's company, and the 1882 season was interrupted due to unsuccessful negotiations with the renowned Covent Garden. By 1883, Campanini began working in Parma alongside his younger brother Cleofonte Campanini, a talented conductor. The Campanini brothers were later invited to the newly opened Metropolitan Opera in the United States, where Italo performed in 'Faust' in October 1883.

After 1883, Campanini mainly resided in New York, securing a prominent position as the leading tenor at the Metropolitan Opera. He later ventured into opera management, serving as an opera manager. It is known that Campanini faced vocal difficulties after the age of 40, which led to significant criticism.

Italo Campanini was married to singer Eva Tetrazzini, the sister of the legendary opera soprano Luisa Tetrazzini. He passed away on November 14, 1896, near Parma. He is remembered as one of the most successful, talented, hardworking, and versatile Italian tenors. In the early 1900s, Campanini's fame was overshadowed by a new star, Enrico Caruso. Unfortunately, no recordings of Campanini's voice have survived to this day, despite evidence of his attempts to make recordings.
