Early Life and Education
Born on February 7, 1950, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Yuri Aleksandrov completed his studies at the Leningrad State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov in 1974 as a pianist. In 1977, he graduated as a theater director from the same institution.
Career at the Mariinsky Theatre
Since 1977, Aleksandrov has been an active director at the S. M. Kirov Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (now known as the Mariinsky Theatre). Among his notable productions at the theater are "Sorotchinskaya Yarmarka," "The Story of Kai and Gerda," "Don Pasquale," "Madama Butterfly," and "Mavra."
Artistic Direction at "Saint-Petersburg Opera"
Yuri Aleksandrov has also served as the Artistic Director of the State Chamber Musical Theater "Saint-Petersburg Opera." There, he directed renowned operas such as "Eugene Onegin" and "Boris Godunov."
International Collaborations
Aleksandrov has directed extensively abroad, particularly through a long-standing contract with the General Directorate of Opera Houses in Turkey. He has staged operas including "Lohengrin," "Otello," "Prince Igor," and "Werther" in various productions.
Recognition and Honors
Aleksandrov's contributions to theater have been widely recognized. In 1997, he received the Golden Soffit Award, one of Saint Petersburg's highest theater honors, for the Best Director in Musical Theater. The same year, he was awarded the title of Merited Artist of the Russian Federation.
