Early Life and Education

Ivaylo Kalfin was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1964. In 1988, he received a Master's degree in international economics from Sofia University. He went on to complete a postgraduate degree in international banking from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom in 1999.

Political Career

Kalfin began his political career in 1994 as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the National Assembly of Bulgaria. He served on parliamentary commissions for international relations and financial policies. From 2001 to 2003, he was a member of the OSCE monitoring mission in Kosovo.

In 2005, Kalfin became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Sergei Stanishev. During his tenure, he played a key role in Bulgaria's accession to the European Union.

European Parliament

In 2009, Kalfin was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). He served as the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party delegation in the European Parliament. Kalfin focused on economic issues, particularly as a Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Budgets.

Presidential Race

In 2011, Kalfin was nominated as the Bulgarian Socialist Party's candidate for President of Bulgaria. He placed second in the first round of elections and advanced to the second round against Rossen Plevneliev. Despite his efforts, Kalfin lost to Plevneliev in the second round.

Later Career

After the presidential election, Kalfin remained active in politics and served as Deputy Prime Minister for Demographic and Social Policies and Minister of Labour and Social Policy from 2014 to 2017. He is a respected figure in Bulgarian politics and continues to work on economic and social issues.

Personal Life

Kalfin enjoys playing squash and diving. He is proficient in English, Spanish, French, and Russian. He is married and has a daughter.
