Early Life and Education
Ivan Ivanovich Bakulin was born on July 29, 1900 (July 16, according to the old style calendar) on the Khotunok farmstead, which is now part of the city of Novocherkassk. Coming from a poor peasant family, Bakulin's education was a challenge. Despite this, he managed to complete a two-grade folk school and the Mikhailovsky Higher Elementary School. After graduating in 1913, he continued his education at the Novocherkassk Teachers' Institute, but dropped out due to lack of funds.
Underground Resistance
During the Great Patriotic War, Bakulin became the leader of the underground resistance in Kharkiv. Under his guidance, the group carried out a series of major diversions in the city, including the destruction of over 23,000 German soldiers, officers, and collaborators; the bombing of 21 trains with troops and equipment; the destruction of 4 enemy headquarters; the disabling of 88 locomotives and 777 wagons; and the destruction of 20 bridges, hundreds of cars, and tractors.
Later Years and Recognition
For his outstanding services and heroism during the war, Ivan Ivanovich Bakulin was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 8, 1965, by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
