Ivan Capelli: A Formula 1 Journey

Beginnings and Formula 3 Success

Italian race car driver Ivan Capelli made his debut in Italian Formula 3 in 1982. The following year, he dominated the series, claiming victory in nine races and securing the championship title.

European Success and Formula 3000

In 1984, Capelli conquered the European Formula 3 championship. The next year, he moved up to Formula 3000, where he emerged as the 1986 champion in the International Championship.

Early Formula 1 Appearances

Capelli made his Formula 1 debut in 1985 with March, competing in three races without finishing. In 1987, he became a full-time driver for the team.

Breakthrough with March

In 1988, Adrian Newey's redesigned March 881 gave Capelli a competitive car. He finished on the podium twice, securing a seventh-place finish in the championship.

Disappointment and Near-Victory

March's subsequent car, the CG-891, proved unsuccessful, with Capelli only finishing twice in 16 races. In 1990, he came agonisingly close to victory at the French Grand Prix, but Alain Prost overtook him just three laps from the end.

Ferrari and Jordan Years

In 1992, Capelli joined Ferrari but failed to impress. After two disappointing races in 1993 with Jordan, his Formula 1 career came to an end.

Post-Formula 1 Career

Following his departure from Formula 1, Capelli raced in various touring car and sports car competitions.
