Ivan Koltso: A Cossack Warrior and Comrade of Yermak
Ivan Koltso was a legendary Cossack ataman and a close associate of Yermak Timofeevich, the conqueror of Siberia. Born on the banks of the Volga River, he initially gained notoriety as a bandit. However, fate intervened when he faced imminent execution for his crimes at the hands of Ivan the Terrible.
Joining Yermak's Quest for Siberia
Seeking refuge from the wrath of the tsar, Koltso joined forces with Yermak in 1579. Together, they embarked on a perilous expedition to subdue the vast Siberian territories controlled by the Tatar khanate of Kuchum.
Participating in the Conquest of Siberia
Koltso proved himself a formidable warrior, participating in countless battles and contributing significantly to the downfall of Kuchum's kingdom. After the capture of Isker, the Tatar capital, Yermak entrusted Koltso with the perilous mission of delivering a tribute to Moscow and pleading for Ivan the Terrible's recognition of their conquest.
Return from Moscow and Resettlement
Koltso successfully conveyed the tribute and returned from Moscow with a royal pardon, rewards for the Cossack leaders, and gifts. With the tsar's blessing, he gathered volunteers to settle in the newly acquired Tobolsk region and brought several priests with him.
Betrayal and Death
In 1583, Yermak dispatched Koltso with a small band of казаки to protect the native Karacha from Noghái raiders. However, Karacha treacherously attacked and killed the entire detachment, including Koltso.
Legacy and Portrayal in Media
Ivan Koltso's legacy as a brave and loyal Cossack remains etched in Russian history. In the film "Yermak," his character is portrayed by the actor Nikita Dzhigurda. Notably, Arnold Schwarzenegger was initially approached for the role but declined, preferring to play the protagonist, Yermak Timofeevich.
