Ivan Hrushetsky: A Soviet Statesman and Politician
Ivan Hrushetsky was a prominent Soviet military and political figure. Born into a family of peasants in Kamyshevakha, he rose through the ranks of the Communist Party and government to hold top positions in Ukraine.
Early Life and Education
Hrushetsky attended the Erastovsky Verkhnedneprovsky Agricultural College. In the 1920s, he worked in various responsible positions in the Zaporizhia region, including as head of the Executive Committee of the Vasylivka District Council.
Political Career
In 1937, Hrushetsky transitioned to party work in the Dnipropetrovsk region, serving as Secretary of the Executive Committee and later as Third Secretary of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU).
In 1939, he was sent to Western Ukraine and became Second Secretary of the Stanislav Regional Committee of the CPU. He was also elected to the People's Assembly of Western Ukraine and the Secretariat of the People's Assembly.
World War II and Postwar
During World War II, Hrushetsky served as a member of the Military Council of various armies and fronts. After the war, he was First Secretary of the Lviv Regional Committee of the party (1944-1948, 1950-1951) and First Secretary of the Volyn Regional Committee of the party (1951-1961).
Party Leadership
In 1961, Hrushetsky became Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPU and Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1966 to 1972, he served as Chairman of the Party Commission under the Central Committee of the CPU.
Presidency and Foreign Relations
From 1972 to 1976, Hrushetsky was Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. As Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, he led the third postwar Soviet parliamentary delegation to Turkey in 1976.
Retirement and Legacy
Hrushetsky retired in 1976 and passed away in 1982. He was a recipient of numerous awards, including six Orders of Lenin and two Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st class.
