Ivan K. Klimanov: A Soviet Ace

Early Life and Education

Ivan Kirillovich Klimanov was born on August 18, 1923, in the village of Sobchakovo in the Ryazan region of Russia. His parents were peasants, and he received his early education in a local school. Klimanov later attended the Muromino-Elevator Technical College and an aeroclub.

Military Service

Klimanov joined the Red Army in 1940 and graduated from the Tbilisi Military Aviation Pilot School in 1941. He first saw action in the Great Patriotic War in August 1942 as a pilot with the 272nd Fighter Aviation Regiment, flying the LaGG-3.

By January 1943, Klimanov had been promoted to senior sergeant and had shot down three enemy aircraft on the Western Front near Smolensk. He was eventually assigned to the 49th Fighter Aviation Regiment in 1944, where he served as deputy commander of a squadron.

Combat Record

As a member of the 49th IAP, Klimanov flew 272 combat missions and engaged in 60 air battles. He personally downed 16 enemy planes and, together with his comrades, contributed to the destruction of five more.

Hero of the Soviet Union

On February 23, 1945, Klimanov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his exceptional bravery and military prowess. He had proven himself to be a skilled and effective fighter pilot, whose actions had significantly contributed to the Soviet war effort.

Post-War Career

After the war, Klimanov continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force. He retired from military service in 1953 with the rank of captain. He subsequently resided in Moscow, where he worked in the State Bank of the USSR.

Awards and Recognition

Klimanov was decorated with numerous medals and orders, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner (three times), the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, and the Order of the Red Star.

Aviation
