Life and Career in Diplomacy

Born in Slovakia, this Slovak lawyer and diplomat served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia during the interwar period. Notably, he was a member of the Czechoslovak delegation at the First Vienna Arbitration in 1938.

Service to the United Nations

From 1946 to 1952, he held the distinguished position of First Legal Counsel of the United Nations. In this role, he also served as the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.

Emigration and Later Life

After the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948, he chose to remain in the United States, living in exile for the rest of his life.
