Ivan Yakovlevich Semyonov

Early Life and Education

Born on August 2, 1937 in Dilijan, Armenia, Ivan Semyonov was the son of a factory worker and a homemaker. At the age of 15, he enrolled in the Faculty of Industrial and Civil Construction at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute.

Professional Career

Upon graduating in 1957, Semyonov worked at the Ministry of Industrial Construction. In 1964, he successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Institute of Economics of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. He rose through the ranks, becoming Associate Professor and Full Professor of the Department of Construction Economics at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute.

Leadership Roles

In 1984, Semyonov was appointed as the chief engineer and deputy manager of the Armenian branch of the Stroybank of the USSR. From 1984 to 1986, he worked as a consultant for the National Bank of Cuba in Havana. Upon his return, he became Deputy Head of the Committee for Supply of Armenia, where he established the first cooperatives in the USSR for the production of goods from recyclable materials.

Post-Soviet Era

In 1988, Semyonov was appointed Chairman of the Committee for Labor and Social Issues. He played an active role in the aftermath of the Spitak earthquake in December 1988, providing relief to the victims. In 1991, he headed the Armenian branch of Tokobank of Russia.

Advocacy for Russian Minorities

Semyonov was a vocal advocate for the rights of Russian minorities in the Caucasus. His efforts drew attention to their plight and led to initiatives from both Armenian and Russian authorities to address their concerns.

Scholarly Work

Semyonov published over 40 academic and scientific papers in Russian, Armenian, and Spanish. His books "History of the Transcaucasian Molokans and Dukhobors" and "Russians in the History of Armenia" chronicled the history of Russo-Armenian relations, the Russian diaspora in Armenia, and its role in the country's development.
