Ivan Slavkov: A Bulgarian Olympic Figure with Controversies
Early Life and Football CareerIvan Slavkov was born on May 11, 1940, and became a prominent figure in Bulgarian sports. In the late 1970s, he was the president of the renowned football club Levski-Spartak.
Olympic Leadership
From 1995 onwards, Slavkov ascended to the position of Chairman of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee and became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) representing Bulgaria.
Corruption Allegations and IOC Expulsion
In 2004, shortly before the Athens Olympic Games, Slavkov was expelled from the IOC under a cloud of corruption allegations. A BBC investigation employed hidden cameras to record a conversation where Slavkov allegedly offered to sell his vote in the 2012 Olympic host city election for 3 million euros.
Defense and Controversy
Slavkov vehemently denied the accusations, claiming that he was attempting to expose the BBC journalists as impostors. However, the allegations continued to stain his reputation, highlighting the murky underbelly of Olympic politics.
Association with the Communist Regime
In Bulgaria, Slavkov's name was inextricably linked to the communist regime of the past. He was married to Lyudmila, the daughter of former communist leader Todor Zhivkov, who tragically passed away in 1981. Their marriage produced a daughter, Evgenia.
