Prince Ivan Ivanovich Temka of Rostov
Prince Ivan Ivanovich Temka was a prominent military leader and the progenitor of the Temkin-Rostov princes.
Early Life and Lineage
Temka was born to Prince Ivan-Yan, a grandson of the ruling prince of Rostov, Andrei Alexandrovich. When the Borisoglebsk region of Rostov was sold to Grand Prince Ivan III in 1474, Temka, despite being born a prince, lost his status as a ruling prince and was thereafter referred to in sources only as a воеvod (military governor).
Military Career
Temka served as a воеvod in various campaigns throughout his career. In 1495, he commanded troops in Tula, and in 1501, he led the vanguard regiment in Novgorod. In 1502, he defended against the Livonians at Yam-gorod and then in the Korboselsky district.
In 1503, Temka became the first воеvod of Ivangorod. That year, on September 13, he repelled an unexpected attack by the Livonians and captured many prisoners. On December 16, he defeated the Livonians again on the Rugodev field.
In 1509, Temka led the advance guard regiment during an expedition from Vyazma to aid Dorogobuzh. During the third siege of Smolensk in 1514, he commanded the vanguard regiment in Velikiye Luki and, after the capture of Smolensk, marched against Orsha as the first воеvod of the same regiment.
Death in Battle
On September 8, 1514, Temka was killed in the Battle of Orsha on the Dnieper River. According to accounts, "the space became tight...and they killed a воеvod in the vanguard regiment, Prince Ivan Ivanovich Temka of Rostov."
Legacy
Temka had four sons: Semyon, Yuri, Vasily, and Grigory, who established the Temkin-Rostov dynasty that later became extinct.
