Biography of Ivan Yanovsky
Ivan Yanovsky, a participant of the Great Patriotic War and a navigator of the 8th Guards Aviation Regiment, was born on January 16, 1919, in the village of Vilenska in the Balakhtinsky district of the Krasnoyarsk region. His father, Ivan Petrovich Yanovsky (1886-1943), and his mother, Elena Ivanovna Yanovskaya (1888-1960), played a significant role in his upbringing. Ivan Yanovsky married Ulyana Ignatyevna Yanovskaya in 1922, and they had a son named Anatoly Ivanovich Yanovsky, born in 1956.
Early Life and Military Service
After graduating from the Krasnoyarsk Pedagogical School, Yanovsky worked as a headmaster at an elementary school from 1937 to 1939. However, with the outbreak of World War II, he immediately joined the front lines. Yanovsky served as a gunner-bombardier in the 224th Air Regiment of the 48th Air Division. In 1941, he was sent to the Ryazan Higher School of Navigators and became a navigator for the 751st Air Regiment of the 17th Air Division. He actively participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, carrying out bombing missions deep into enemy territory, targeting bridges, crossings, railway stations, and supporting partisan raids. Yanovsky often had to undertake multiple difficult sorties in a single day. Despite facing attacks from German fighter planes and anti-aircraft artillery, he successfully completed his missions.
Recognition and Post-War Service
Yanovsky served as a navigator in the 8th Guards Aviation Regiment of the 8th Guards Air Division of the Air Defense Forces. In 1944, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his successful execution of combat tasks. From 1944 to 1951, Yanovsky served in the 224th and 202nd Air Regiments of the 13th Guards Division. He later graduated from the Higher Officer Flight School for Unit Commanders and served as a navigator in the 208th Heavy Bomber Air Regiment of the 11th Guards Orlov-Berlin Air Division. After leaving the military, Yanovsky worked as an engineer and laboratory assistant at the branch of the Research Institute of Automatic Equipment of the Electromechanical Plant. He was also a senior engineer in the field of safety engineering at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Senior Engineer of the 2nd Department of the Ministry of Building Materials of the Ukrainian SSR.
Later Life and Achievements
In addition to his military achievements, Yanovsky had publications in newspapers such as "Pravda" and "Krasnaya Zvezda." He became the Chairman of the Darnytsia District Council of Veterans in Kiev. Ivan Yanovsky was honored with two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War, two Orders of the Red Star, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky III degree, and medals such as "For Combat Merits," "For the Defense of Stalingrad," "For the Capture of Königsberg," "For the Capture of Budapest," and "For the Capture of Berlin," among others.
