Childhood and Early Life

Mikhail Alekseevich Ivasik was born on May 1, 1917, in the village of Petrushi, Primorsky Krai, to a peasant family. He completed seven grades of schooling and worked as a store manager in the city of Ussuriysk.

Military Career

In September 1936, Ivasik joined the Red Army and served in the Amur Flotilla. He participated in the battles against Japanese militarists at Lake Khasan in 1938.

From December 1941, Ivasik fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In 1943, he graduated from the Junior Lieutenant's Course and became the best sniper in his division, with 320 confirmed kills.

Combat Experience and Bravery

On August 2, 1944, Ivasik's battalion, under his command, launched a daring raid into the enemy's rear through treacherous marshes around Lake Lubanas in Latvia. They seized a vital highway, repulsing four enemy counter-attacks. Ivasik was wounded twice but refused to leave the battlefield. On August 18, 1944, he was mortally wounded by enemy artillery fire.

Posthumous Recognition and Honors

For his extraordinary bravery and leadership, Ivasik was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945. He was also honored with the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, the Patriotic War (2nd class), the Red Star, and numerous medals.

Streets in Ussuriysk and Madona, Latvia, bear his name, and an obelisk stands in his memory in the latter city.

Legacy as a Skilled Sniper and Mentor

Ivasik became famous for his exceptional sniping skills and his mentorship of other snipers. His open letter titled "Increase the Number of Snipers" inspired many to join the fight against the enemy in his footsteps.

Ivasik's unwavering determination and willingness to sacrifice himself for his comrades made him a true hero. His actions during the battle on the dam in Latvia stand as a testament to his bravery and unwavering commitment to the Soviet cause.
