Early Life and Amateur Career
Born in a Liverpool suburb, Balmer began his footballing journey as an amateur with Collegiate Old Boys and Everton, following in the footsteps of his uncles who had all played for the Blues at various times.
Professional Debut at Liverpool
On August 23, 1935, at the age of 19, Balmer signed his first professional contract with Liverpool under manager George Patterson. His debut came on September 21 at Elland Road, where the Reds fell 1-0 to Leeds United.
Technical Brilliance and Goalscoring Prowess
Blessed with exceptional technique and footballing instinct, Balmer quickly established himself as a key striker for Liverpool, excelling in both inside forward and center forward positions. His goalscoring exploits were prolific, even during the interruption of World War II, which robbed him of potential peak years.
Post-War Success and Record-Breaking Feats
After the war, Balmer resumed his goalscoring exploits with unwavering determination. In the 1946-47 season, partnering with Albert Stubbins, he netted 24 goals to help Liverpool lift their first post-war English league title. That season, Balmer achieved an unprecedented feat, scoring a hat-trick of hat-tricks in seven consecutive matches.
Captaincy and Legacy
In 1947-48, Balmer was appointed Liverpool's captain, a testament not only to his longevity at the club but also to his exemplary character. Between 1935 and 1952, he made 312 appearances and scored 111 goals, coming within one goal of reaching a century of league goals for the Reds.
