Early Life and Education
Jack Thomas Davies was born on December 17, 1995, in Dewsbury, Northeastern England. Growing up with his younger sister in an artistic family, his father was a vocalist and brass band leader, while his mother taught singing and piano. Art was an integral part of their childhood, and Jack developed a passion for singing and songwriting at a young age.
At 16, he began taking piano and composition lessons at the Manchester School of Music. On weekends, he performed with a youth theater group and participated in annual Christmas productions. Introverted as a child, acting helped Jack gain confidence and make friends. In 2017, he graduated from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
Theater and Film
Jack made his screen debut at age 18 with a minor role in "The Secret of Haven." However, his true calling lay on stage. He landed leading roles in "The Braille Legacy" at the Charing Cross Theatre and "Pinocchio" at the Royal National Theatre in London. He also graced the stages of Belfast, Ireland, with operas such as "Sweeney Todd" and "The Musical of Musicals."
Jack portrayed Kai in "The Snow Queen" and played a lead in the Royal Shakespeare Company's musical "The Magician's Elephant." He aspires to explore more of William Shakespeare's works on stage.
Starting in 2018, Jack gradually expanded his filmography. As a theater actor, he initially found the transition to camera challenging. He appeared in a supporting role in the fourth season of "Hattie Feather," before making cameos in "Father Brown" and "The Witcher." In 2021, he had a brief appearance in the anthology series "Inside No. 9."
Personal Life
Jack is private about his personal life. On social media, he mostly shares photos with friends and updates on his work. Occasionally, he posts pictures with his partner, Northern Irish actor Cavan Clarke.
Jack stands at 5'9" (175 cm) tall.
Recent ProjectsIn February 2021, Jack landed the lead role in the feature film musical "Magic Flute," an adaptation of Mozart's opera. The film follows 17-year-old Tim, who dreams of becoming a singer and stumbles upon a magical world.
Jack admitted to being terrified to take on such a renowned work of art. He intensified his vocal training to master operatic singing, despite having experience in musical theater. However, he had never seen "Magic Flute" on stage before.
Principal photography spanned Germany, Austria, the UK, and the Canary Islands until Spring 2021. Jack particularly enjoyed filming amidst the Austrian mountains and lakes, which he found enchanting.
During production, the Dewsbury native bonded with the cast. The crew became like family, spending time together cycling. Jack holds fond memories of sharing moments with Iwan Rheon, having been a fan of the "Game of Thrones" star since he was 13.
"Magic Flute" premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in Autumn 2022 and was released in theaters in Spring 2023.
Meanwhile, Jack secured another high-profile role. He joined the main cast of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone" Season 2. His character, Wylan, is passionate about alchemy, mathematics, and music and is openly queer. The new season premiered in March 2023.
Jack was a huge fan of "Shadow and Bone" Season 1 and the books it was based on, making him thrilled to join the project. However, he treated his Netflix contract with utmost secrecy, not revealing his involvement to his family and friends until the show's release, believing that was protocol. Fortunately, being away from home made it easier to prepare for the role without distractions.
Jack stayed in constant communication with his on-screen partner, Kit Young. To flesh out his character, he created Pinterest boards, curated playlists with indie music and Edvard Grieg pieces, and even wrote a few melodies for Wylan himself. As an openly gay actor, Jack appreciates the increasing representation of LGBTQ+ characters in film and television.
