Early Life and Theological Background

Isaac Abendana, a prominent Jewish theologian, was born in Spain to a family of German descent. Living in Amsterdam, he engaged in a notable correspondence with Lodewijk de Dieu, a Leiden theology professor who attempted to convert him to Christianity. This correspondence was published as "Disputatio epistolaris hebraica" in 1669 and later included in de Dieu's "Nucleus Prophetlae" in 1683.

Rabbinical Service

In 1655, Abendana became the rabbi of Rotterdam, and in 1680, he moved to London, where he served as a rabbi until his death. During his tenure, he played a significant role in promoting Jewish scholarship and fostering interfaith dialogue.

Literary Contributions

Abendana's contributions to Jewish literature were noteworthy. In 1663, he translated Judah Halevi's "Kuzari" from Hebrew to Spanish, defending the tenets of Judaism in the face of philosophical challenges. After relocating to London, he translated the "Mishnah" into Spanish. His brother, Isaac Abendana, is also credited with translating the "Mishnah" into Latin.
