Jacob Berend Bakema (1914-1981)
Education and Early CareerJacob Berend Bakema, a renowned Dutch architect, was born in 1914. His architectural journey began at the Groningen Higher Technical College, followed by studies at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, where he became a disciple of Mart Stam.
Post-War Reconstruction and CIAM Participation
In the aftermath of World War II, Bakema played a significant role in the reconstruction of Rotterdam. From 1946 onwards, he actively participated in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM), holding the position of Secretary from 1955.
Team 10 and Beyond
Together with like-minded individuals, Bakema co-founded Team 10, an offshoot organization of CIAM. In 1964, he was appointed Professor at the Delft University of Technology, followed by a similar role at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 1965.
Architectural Philosophy and Notable Works
Bakema advocated against the dogmatic application of functionalism, emphasizing architecture as a spatial expression of human activities. His notable designs include the Zuid-plein Community Center (1947-48) and the Venser Cinema (1947-49) in Rotterdam, as well as his proposal for a community center in St. Louis, USA (1955).
