Early Life and Education

Jacob Romero Gibson was born on July 11, 1996, in Jamaica into a large family of mixed Latino, African, and Asian descent. His early life is shrouded in mystery, except for the fact that he grew up in the United States. After high school, Gibson enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts, founded by Walt Disney. There, he studied the Michael Chekhov method, a system developed by Anton Chekhov's nephew and Stanislavsky's student. Gibson graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and embarked on a career in theater.

Acting Career

Gibson's film career began with short films and bit parts in medical dramas such as "The Resident" and "Grey's Anatomy," working alongside Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, and Ellen Pompeo. His breakthrough came in 2019 when he landed a role in the Oprah Winfrey-produced family drama "Greenleaf," created by "Lost" and "Six Feet Under" showrunner Craig Wright. The series centered on the Greenleaf family, an African-American dynasty presiding over a Memphis megachurch. Gibson played AJ, the on-screen son of Merle Dandridge.

"One Piece" and Beyond

In 2023, Gibson gained widespread recognition with his starring role in the Netflix fantasy series "One Piece." Based on the bestselling Japanese manga by Eiichiro Oda, the show was developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda and featured an ensemble cast including Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, and Taz Skylar. Gibson portrayed Usopp, a pirate specializing in slingshot marksmanship. To prepare for the role, he underwent extensive training in projectile weapons. Gibson described his character as a "dreamer with a good heart." "One Piece" premiered in late summer 2023.

Personal Life and Hobbies

Gibson is private about his personal life, but he is reportedly close with his family, especially his younger brother, who looks up to him. In 2020, Gibson's mother passed away prematurely, an event he mourned in several Instagram posts (the platform is banned in Russia and owned by Meta, classified as extremist in the country). His Instagram account often features philosophical musings on life and death, appreciation for the natural world, and reminders to drink water.

Outside of acting, Gibson pursued a parallel career as a musician. He was part of the indie duo Good Peoplez before going solo.
