A Challenging Task

Making an autistic child a fully functional member of society is no easy task. Not every psychologist can find a way to reach the heart of even one such child. Dogs have always been loyal friends and helpers to humans. In the past, four-legged companions were primarily used as protectors or hunters. Nowadays, more and more attention is being paid to the new talents of dogs, particularly their ability to act as healers.

The Story of Jacob Owens

Eight-year-old Jacob Owens, a resident of Peterborough, suffers from a severe form of autism. The condition prevents him from effectively communicating with others and expressing his emotions in a way that is understandable to them. For many years, Jacob had no friends, and he rarely smiled. Any venture outside of his comfort zone was an extreme stress for him, and a trip to the nearest store would cost him and his family a year's worth of nerves. As Jacob grew older, the situation did not improve. He led an increasingly solitary life, with few new people entering his world. It was also difficult for his family, as they had to abide by the strict rules set by the boy.

A Life-Changing Encounter

Everything changed in 2013 when Jacob's mother, Susan Owens, contacted representatives of the charitable project "Support Dogs." Through one of their programs, they found a new friend for Jacob. Labrador Araminta, or simply Mint, quickly became not only a pet but also a true member of the family. Mint's presence in Jacob's life transformed the entire family's life beyond recognition, and the changes were clearly positive. The boy quickly bonded with the dog, and the mere existence of Mint made his interactions with the world much more pleasant. Going to the store now became a willingly undertaken task for the sake of his beloved dog, without any tantrums or anxiety. Even when Mint was not around, just mentioning her could calm and comfort Jacob.

A New Beginning

Gradually, the changes in Jacob's behavior became more and more noticeable. Previously, when he rarely ventured into public, he tried not to draw attention to himself. If someone did pay attention to him, the boy would react negatively, becoming visibly anxious and agitated. Mint managed to change that too. Now, anyone willing to discuss his beautiful dog would find an energetic and engaging conversationalist in Jacob, even if they were complete strangers to him. This was an incredible feat for a child with his condition. With each passing day, Jacob became calmer, more composed, and more confident. While there are still some communication difficulties for Jacob, overall, Mint has had an incredible impact on him in a relatively short period of time.

The Power of a Special Dog

Certainly, not just any dog could help a child like Jacob open up to the world. Mint, like many of her "colleagues," went through specialized training. Professional trainers teach dogs, enabling them to later teach their young charges. It is not easy for autistic children to interact with people, but an intelligent and well-trained dog can break through their protective shell and teach the child how to communicate with others. The dog becomes not only the child's best friend, although that fact cannot be disregarded. With the dog's help, the child discovers a path to the outside world.
