In 1924, Vilner triumphed in the inaugural Ukrainian Championship held in Kiev, surpassing the renowned Fyodor Bogatyarchuk. A year later, he successfully defended his title in Kharkiv, this time edging out Nikolai Sorokin. In 1928, he shared first place with Vladimir Kirillov in the fifth Ukrainian Championship in Odessa.

Vilner actively participated in the Soviet Championships, earning recognition for his exceptional skills. He competed in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, and 1929. Furthermore, he emerged victorious in the All-Union Chess Composition Championship in 1929, showcasing his mastery in three-move chess problems.

Tragically, Vilner passed away on June 29, 1931, at the age of 27 after a prolonged illness.
