Polugaevsky was born in Mogilev, Belarus. Despite his interest in chess from a young age, he initially pursued an education in electrical engineering. However, his passion for the game would soon lead him down a different path.

In 1962, Polugaevsky achieved the prestigious title of International Grandmaster. He then went on to win the USSR Championship twice, in 1967 and 1968. His exceptional talent and analytical prowess made him a force to be reckoned with in the chess world.
