Biography of Jacqueline Freney

Jacqueline Freney, an Australian swimmer, was born on June 6, 1992, in Brisbane, Australia. From a young age, she suffered from cerebral palsy but found her passion in swimming. Her father, Michael, became her coach and training partner, being the first to teach Jacqueline how to swim and consider a professional career.

Paralympic Success

In 2012, Jacqueline was honored with the titles "Australian Paralympian of the Year" and "Sportsperson of the Year" after winning eight gold medals and setting a record for the most medals won at the Paralympic Games in London. Her seventh medal made her the most successful swimmer in the Australian Paralympic team's history, surpassing Siobhan Paton's record set in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

Early Years and Talent

Despite her diagnosis, Jacqueline's parents decided to raise her as if she didn't have any illness. When she was still a child, her father came up with the idea to teach her how to swim, inspired by the success of the Australian Paralympic team. They spent hours in the pool, perfecting different swimming styles. It soon became evident that Jacqueline progressed much faster than a typical child and could outperform even able-bodied swimmers. Jacqueline made her debut as part of the national team at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, where she won three bronze medals. Determined to showcase her full potential, she trained relentlessly for the following Games. In the 2012 London Paralympic Games, Jacqueline quickly established herself as a favorite on multiple distances, effortlessly surpassing her competitors. Her dominance was so evident that someone jokingly suggested adding an extra podium spot just for her. It was after the race on the 400-meter freestyle, which determined both a medal and her personal supremacy within the Australian team, that she exclaimed her famous words, "Seven! I'm on cloud nine," which made headlines in numerous sports publications.

Awards and Recognition

Jacqueline's career continued to soar as she broke a world record in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships. Today, she is a star in the women's Paralympic swimming team, receiving numerous awards, including "Paralympian of the Year," "Sportsperson of the Year," and the prestigious "Young Australian of the Year" in November 2013.
