Jacqueline Gourault: A Distinguished French Politician
Birth and Early CareerJacqueline Gourault was born on November 20, 1950, in the French department of Loir-et-Cher. Initially, she pursued a career in education as a history and geography teacher.
Political Journey
Gourault embarked on her political path in 1974 by participating in Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's presidential campaign. In 1983, she was elected to the municipal council of La Chaussée-Saint-Victor and served as its mayor from 1989 to 2014. Her political ascent continued as she was elected as a regional councilor for the Centre-Val de Loire region in 1992 and later became president of the Blois agglomeration community in 2001.
National Politics
In 2001, Gourault entered the French Senate, where she held the position of Vice-President of the Union for French Democracy, led by François Bayrou. She remained a staunch ally of Bayrou throughout her career.
Ministerial Positions
Gourault held several ministerial roles in the French government. In 2017, she was appointed Minister attached to the Minister of the Interior in the second Philippe government. In 2018, she became the Minister of Territorial Development. She later advocated for a symbolic 1 euro income tax for the 53% of French citizens who did not pay it, arguing for equitable tax distribution.
Government of Jean Castex
Gourault joined the government of Jean Castex in 2020 as Minister of Territorial Cohesion and Relations with Local Authorities. She served in this role until her appointment to the Constitutional Council of France in March 2022.

Jacqueline Gourault was appointed to the Constitutional Council on March 14, 2022, where she currently serves as a member.
