Jacques Germain Soufflot: French Architect of the Classical Revival

Early Life and Education

Jacques Germain Soufflot was born in Irancy, France, on July 22, 1713. After completing his early education in Lyon, he traveled to Rome in 1731 and became a fellow of the French Academy from 1734 to 1737.

Classical Revivalist and Innovator

Soufflot was a passionate admirer of ancient and Renaissance classical architecture. He sought to infuse the architectural orders with maximum monumentality and expressive power, rejecting the whimsical flourishes of Rococo. However, unlike many of his French predecessors, he also valued medieval architecture, particularly Gothic, for its lightness and logical structures.

Architectural Masterpieces in Lyon

During his time in Lyon, Soufflot left significant impact on the architectural landscape. He designed the facade of the vast Hôtel-Dieu hospital (1741-1842) and the Bourse (1751-1752), now a Protestant church. The legal school (1771) and the reworking of the Château de Meudon (1764) in Paris further demonstrate his architectural prowess.

The Pantheon: A Monumental Masterpiece

Soufflot's crowning achievement was the Church of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, designed in 1755 and constructed from 1764 to 1790. Intended as the city's main church, it was later transformed into the Panthéon, a mausoleum for France's greatest figures. This cruciform, domed building boasts an impressive classical portico and innovative construction, especially in its interior. The massive dome rests on lightweight, triangular supports that were later distorted by alterations.

Publications and Legacy

In addition to his architectural practice, Soufflot published "Plans de trois temples antiques de Pesto" (1764) and "Oeuvres ou Recueil des différents projets d'Architecture" (1767), a two-volume treatise on architectural theory. Jacques Germain Soufflot died in Paris on August 29, 1780, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable Neoclassical architecture that continues to inspire and awe.
