Early Life and EducationJacques Perrin was born in Paris on July 13, 1941, to Alexandre Simone, a director at the Comédie Française, and Marie Perrin, an actress. Perrin debuted on the silver screen at the tender age of five in Marcel Carné's "Gates of the Night." He later pursued formal training at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts.
Acting Career
Perrin's first notable role was Lorenzo in Valerio Zurlini's "The Girl with a Suitcase." His exceptional performance as a 16-year-old youth earned him widespread recognition. In Zurlini's subsequent film, "Family Chronicle," Perrin played the younger brother of Marcello Mastroianni's character.
In 1965, Perrin starred as Daniel in the adaptation of Sébastien Japrisot's "Murder in a Sleeping Car." The film featured an illustrious cast that included Yves Montand, Michel Piccoli, Simone Signoret, and Jean-Louis Trintignant.
He had the privilege of working alongside French cinema icons Brigitte Bardot in "The Truth" and Catherine Deneuve in "The Young Girls of Rochefort" during the 1960s. Perrin's portrayal of Colin in the adaptation of Boris Vian's "Froth on the Daydream" is considered one of his greatest acting triumphs.
Transition to Production and Later Career
Recognizing the fading glimmer of his youth, Perrin established his own production company in the 1970s. While still actively acting, he shifted his focus to producing films.
In his later years, Perrin delivered powerful performances in "The Cop's Word" and "Cinema Paradiso." In the 2010s, he embraced historical roles, portraying King Louis XI in "Louis XI: The Fractured Power" and Cardinal Richelieu in "Richelieu, Purple and Blood."

As a producer, Perrin's contributions extended to both fiction and documentary films. His documentaries, often directed by himself, explored ecosystems. Notable examples include "Microcosmos" (1996) and "Seasons" (2016). His feature film "Oceans" and the television series "Oceans" gained international acclaim.
Personal Life and Legacy
Perrin found marital happiness in 1995 when he married director Valentine, who bore him two children: Maxance and Lancelot. His eldest son, Mathieu, from a previous relationship, collaborated with his father on the documentary "Winged Migration" (2001).
Jacques Perrin was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor and elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2016. His passing on April 21, 2022, marked a profound loss for the French film industry. He will be remembered as a multitalented artist whose work transcended genres and left an enduring legacy.
