Jacques Vimont
Jacques Vimont, a prominent French diplomat, was elevated to the exceptional personal rank of Ambassador of France for life. He served as France's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1973 to 1976.
Education and Diplomatic Career
Vimont held a law degree and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature. He entered diplomatic service in 1938 and served in various diplomatic missions, including Yugoslavia, Tunisia, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico.
Ambassadorship and Ministerial Appointments
In 1965, Vimont was appointed Ambassador to Mexico, a position he held until 1969. He then became Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, serving from 1969 to 1973. His final diplomatic assignment was as Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1973 to 1976.
Later Life
Upon his retirement from diplomacy in 1976, Vimont served on the board of directors of Air France. He was also appointed a member of the Council of the Order of the Legion of Honour and the Council of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Family and Legacy
Vimont had a son, Pierre, who also became a prominent French diplomat. Pierre held the rank of Ambassador of France for life and served as Ambassador to the United States.
