Early Life and Military Career
Jacques de Savoie was born as the son of Philippe I, Duke of Nemours, and Charlotte de Longueville. He distinguished himself as a military commander during the sieges of Lans and Metz (1552-1553), the Battle of Renty (1554), and the Piedmont campaign (1555).
Political Intrigues and Conflicts
Jacques was a staunch supporter of the Guise family. However, his involvement in a conspiracy forced him to retreat to Savoy for a period. Upon his return to France, he fought against the Huguenots, earning successes in Dauphiné and Lyonnais. In 1564, his County of Geneva was elevated to the status of a duchy.
Involvement in the French Wars of Religion
In 1567, Jacques played a crucial role in persuading the royal court to return from Meaux to Paris. He fought in the Battle of Saint-Denis and protested against the Peace of Longjumeau. He also successfully defended against an invasion by Wolfgang, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken.
Later Life and Legacy
In his later years, Jacques devoted himself to literature and the arts. He died in Annecy. His legacy includes his marriage to Anne d'Este, daughter of the Duke of Ferrara, and the establishment of the independent Duchy of Geneva.
