Jafar Jabbarly: A Trailblazing Azerbaijani Author and Dramatist
Early Life and EducationBorn in 1899, Jafar Jabbarly's family relocated to Baku after his father's passing in 1902. He completed his schooling in 1915 and went on to study electromechanics at a polytechnic училища. However, his true passion lay elsewhere. In 1920, he enrolled in Azerbaijan State University's medical faculty but soon switched to Oriental studies, nurturing his interest in drama.
Writing and Literary Contributions
Jabbarly's literary debut occurred at a young age, with an early poem appearing in the "Haqiqat-i Afkar" newspaper in 1911. Throughout his career, he penned over twenty plays, countless poems, essays, and articles. His writings were deeply influenced by the Sovietization of the 1920s, promoting communism, equality, and cultural transformation.
Jabbarly's significant contribution to Azerbaijani theater was his 1925-1926 translation and staging of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in Azerbaijani. This milestone introduced European theatrical traditions to underprivileged Azerbaijani communities.
A Pioneer of Azerbaijani Cinema
Jabbarly is credited as the founder of Azerbaijan's film school. Two of his plays, "Sevil" and "Diamond," were adapted into films in 1929 and 1936, respectively. Both films championed women's rights and challenged traditional gender inequalities.
Legacy and Honors
Jafar Jabbarly passed away at the young age of 35 due to heart failure. As a testament to his enduring legacy, Azerbaijanfilm State Film Studio, a street in Baku, a metro station, and a drama theater in Ganja bear his name. The Yerevan Azerbaijani Theater was also named in his honor.
