Jakob Dubs: A Renowned Swiss Politician
Jakob Dubs was a prominent Swiss politician who served as the country's president. Born into a butcher's family, Dubs pursued a legal education at the universities of Bern and Heidelberg after completing his studies in Zurich.
Early Life and Marriages
Tragedy struck early in Dubs' life when his first wife, Franziska Kampher, passed away in 1850. In 1856, he remarried to Pauline Heitz, the daughter of a silk manufacturer.
Political Career
Dubs entered the political arena in 1847 when he was elected to the Zurich cantonal parliament. He was also active in journalism, editing "Schweizerischen Republikaners" and "Landboten." In 1849, he was elected to the National Council, followed by the Senate and Executive Council (cantonal government) in 1854.
Federal Council and Presidency
In the Senate, Dubs aligned himself with Alfred Escher's liberal faction against Jacob Stämpfli's radicals. After the passing of Jonas Furrer, Dubs was elected to the Swiss Federal Council.
Role in Humanitarian Initiatives
Dubs played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Swiss Red Cross in 1866, alongside Gustave Moynier. He became the organization's first president.
