Early Life and Career
Born in MoldovaYaakov Savelyevich Kulich was born in Kishinev, Moldova, into a large family. Before venturing into the film industry, he worked as a film projectionist until 1919.
Montage and Assistance in Odessa
From 1919 to 1927, Kulich worked as a film editor and assistant cameraman at the Odessa film studio VUFKU. Notably, he assisted renowned filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein.
Cinematographer during the War
Beginning in 1928, Kulich became the primary cinematographer for the Odessa film studio. During the Great Patriotic War, he worked in various film studios across the Soviet Union, including Ashgabat, Dushanbe, Alma-Ata, Tashkent, Kishinev, and Yerevan.
Post-War Work in Cinema
In the post-war period, Kulich served as a cameraman from 1952 to 1953 at the Lower Volga Motion Picture Chronicle Studio in Saratov. He contributed to newsreels and commissioned films. In 1957, he became a cameraman and, in 1967, a director at the Moscow Scientific Film Studio "Mosnauchfilm".
Filmography and Innovations
Kulich operated as the cinematographer for over 100 feature films, documentaries, and popular science films. He is credited with developing and implementing innovative techniques for combination filmmaking.
Directing Scientific Films
As a director, Kulich specialized in scientific popular science films, including "Reproduction" (1971), "Pond Fish" (1977), and "Infectious Diseases".
Legacy
Kulich's son, Savva, became a successful filmmaker in his own right, working as a director and screenwriter.
