Early Life and Education

Born in Smíchov, Prague, Arbes pursued technical studies at the university but later transitioned to journalism. As the editor-in-chief of the N?rodn? listy newspaper (1868-1873), his writing often garnered controversy.

Imprisonment and Career in Theater

In 1873, Arbes was imprisoned for publishing a contentious article. Upon his release, he joined the Prozat?mn? divadlo theater as a playwright (1876-1879). Later, he became the editor of several magazines, including Gnom (1880-1881), Hlas, and Politik.

Literary Style and Genre

Arbes's literary style was characterized by a blend of three distinct elements: an admiration for the Czech writer Jan Neruda, a fascination with the supernatural and technical advancements, and radical socialist views. This unique combination led to the creation of a new genre he termed "romaneto."
