Jamal Herring: A Distinguished Career in Boxing
Early Life and Military ServiceJamal William Herring was born on October 30, 1985, in Coram, New York. After joining the United States Marine Corps in October 2003, he embarked on two tours of duty in Iraq, ultimately attaining the rank of sergeant. Herring is a devoted father to his six children.
Amateur Boxing Journey
Herring's passion for boxing ignited in 2001 at age 15 while attending Longwood High School. In 2012, he served as captain of the U.S. Olympic boxing team at the London Games. However, his Olympic dreams were cut short in the first round of the 64 kg category by Kazakhstan's Daniyar Yeleussinov.
Professional Triumphs
Herring made his professional debut on December 8, 2012, with a unanimous decision victory over experienced Puerto Rican Jose Valderrama. On July 2, 2016, he encountered his first setback—a 10th-round technical knockout defeat against seasoned Russian Denis Shafikov. Herring subsequently acknowledged that this bout was the most challenging he had ever faced.
In a pivotal moment, Herring captured the WBO super featherweight title on May 25, 2019, by defeating Japanese boxer Masayuki Ito via unanimous decision. He has successfully defended his title since then, establishing himself as a formidable force in the boxing world.
