Biography of James Alix Michel

James Alix Michel, the former President of Seychelles, played a significant role in the democratization of the Seychelles islands. He is also credited with the economic growth of the islands in the mid-1990s.

Early Life and Education

James Alix Michel was born on August 16, 1944, in Mahe, Seychelles. He completed his secondary education in Victoria and subsequently enrolled in a pedagogical college in 1960. After graduating from college, Michel worked as a teacher for two years before joining the telecommunications company Cable & Wireless. He later ventured into the hotel business.

Political Career

In 1976, when Seychelles gained independence, Michel joined the Seychelles People's Progressive Front party led by then-Prime Minister France-Albert Rene. A year later, Michel actively participated in the coup organized by Rene against President James Mancham. After the coup, Michel became a part of the new government, holding the position of Minister of State Administration and Information. In 1978, the Seychelles People's Progressive Front was transformed into the Seychelles National Party, and Michel became a member of the Central Executive Committee, occupying various key positions. In 1984, he became the Deputy Secretary-General of the party, and in 1994, he assumed the role of Secretary-General.

Presidential Achievements

Under President Rene, James Alix Michel held several ministerial positions. His economic reforms were particularly successful, leading to an economic boom in Seychelles based on tourism and fishing. These reforms involved attracting investments and stimulating the private sector. In addition, Michel, as the Minister of Education, provided free 13-year education to children and ensured equal opportunities for learning. He also contributed to the development of modern telecommunications systems and mass media in Seychelles.

Presidency and Current Role

In April 2004, when France-Albert Rene retired, James Alix Michel temporarily assumed the presidency. In 2006, he won the presidential election with 53.7% of the votes. However, opposition candidates criticized widespread electoral fraud. Currently, Michel holds several ministerial positions, including Minister of Defense, Police, and Emergency Situations. The opposition has raised concerns about violations of freedom of speech and press on the islands, although they acknowledge some positive aspects of Michel's leadership.
