Early Life and CareerJimmy Armfield, born in Denton, England, began his football journey in amateur matches. His exceptional skills caught the attention of Blackpool manager Joe Smith, leading to an amateur contract. On December 27, 1954, Armfield made his debut for Blackpool against Portsmouth.
One Club, One Career
Throughout his illustrious career, Armfield remained loyal to Blackpool, playing predominantly as a right-back. He became an integral part of the team, amassing 627 appearances and scoring six goals. For a decade, he proudly served as Blackpool's captain.
International Recognition
From 1959 to 1966, Armfield earned 43 caps for England, including 15 as captain. His debut match was against Brazil in front of a massive crowd of 120,000. At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, he was hailed as the world's best right-back, an honor he held from 1962 to 1964. Despite being included in the squad for the 1966 World Cup, an injury prevented him from taking part. However, Armfield was awarded a gold medal in 2009, along with the other non-playing squad members.
Management and Commentary
After retiring from playing, Armfield embarked on a successful managerial career. He guided Blackpool to the Third Division championship in 1972/73 and led them to the European Cup final in 1975. He also worked as a football commentator for BBC Radio Five Live.
