Biography of James Brett
James Brett is the director of the "Museum of Everything" - an exhibition project that celebrates the work of outsider artists and showcases the diverse talents of individuals without formal artistic training. Born in England, Brett has brought his project to various cities in Russia, including Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and St. Petersburg.
Creating the "Museum of Everything"
The "Museum of Everything" project takes place in the pavilion of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, located in Gorky Park in Moscow. From August 30th to September 2nd, and then from September 6th to September 9th, Brett invites anyone who creates art without formal education to participate in the project. This includes homemakers, businessmen, construction workers with artistic hobbies, residents of nursing homes, and individuals with autism or homelessness. The goal is to create a portrait of contemporary Russian amateur art.
The Selection Process
The selection process of artworks for the museum is unique. Brett's team travels with an empty van to each city, where a jury of local artists and curators reviews the submitted artworks. By the end of the day, the van is filled with selected works. The exhibition then becomes a portrait of the city's contemporary art scene. Exceptional artists are invited to participate in the final exhibition in Moscow, and some artworks may even become part of the London collection.
Beyond Traditional Art
The "Museum of Everything" is not limited to traditional painting; it welcomes sculptures, handmade books, carvings, embroidery, and even philosophical concepts. The aim is to showcase a wide range of artistic expressions and transform spaces into unique environments. Installations that seamlessly blend into the surroundings or create an alternative reality are particularly appreciated.
Cultural Differences and Russian Soul
Brett acknowledges the notable differences between European and Russian cultures. He finds the Russian soul unbelievably mysterious and believes it is reflected in the artworks created by amateur artists. In St. Petersburg, for example, a businessman-artist portrays apocalyptic visions influenced by both Russian Orthodox traditions and pre-Christian beliefs. In Kazan, the combination of Christianity, paganism, and Russian mysticism can be observed. The rich history of crafts and icon painting adds another layer to the artistic diversity in Russia.
Showcasing Personal Stories
The "Museum of Everything" also provides a platform for artists to share personal stories through their art. For instance, an artist with autism found solace in creating art, allowing him to express himself when faced with behavioral challenges. Another artist, at the age of 86, presented detailed scenes of group sex, showcasing a personal and intimate aspect of his life that was important to him. The museum strives to create an inclusive space where artists can freely share their unique perspectives.
A Non-Profit Endeavor
While the "Museum of Everything" in the UK is a non-profit organization that relies on donations and fundraising events, Brett hopes to replicate its success in Russia. He seeks support from charitable foundations and occasionally organizes charity auctions and exhibitions where artists receive honorariums. Brett's vision is to bring art to a wider audience and challenge the traditional notion of what constitutes valid artistic expression.
