Biography of James Bulger
James Patrick Bulger was born in 1990 in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, to Ralph Stephen Bulger and Denise Bulger. His life was tragically cut short when he became a victim of murder on February 12, 1993.
The Tragic Events
On that fateful day, Denise, James' mother, went shopping with her brother's friend. She brought James along to the New Strand Shopping Centre. After leaving the supermarket, where James had caused some mischief in the children's clothing section, the women went to a butcher shop. Denise left James outside, but when she came out of the shop, her son was nowhere to be found.
Security cameras captured footage of two boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both born in 1982, leading the two-year-old James away at 3:42 pm. Two days later, James' body was discovered on the railway tracks in Walton, three kilometers from the shopping center. He had been brutally beaten, his face covered in paint, and left to die.
The Killers
Investigations later revealed that both boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, came from troubled families. Jon, one of four children, had parents who constantly separated and reconciled, leading to a turbulent home life. Interestingly, Jon was the only one among his siblings who did not have developmental issues.
Robert Thompson, a friend of Jon's, was one of six sons in his family. They were largely left to fend for themselves as their mother, who was left without a husband, became increasingly involved with alcohol. Robert was typically quiet and reserved, often trying to appear more aggressive than he actually was by using foul language. However, his attempts to be taken seriously were mostly disregarded.
The two young killers left James to die on the railway tracks in an attempt to cover up their crime, believing he would eventually be run over by a train.
The Trial and Release
During the trial, both killers showed no remorse, although they appeared visibly frightened. The public opinion in Britain was divided, with some demanding the harshest punishment for the young murderers, while others argued that their age meant they were unaware of the gravity of their actions. The motives behind their brutal act remained undisclosed.
Jon Venables and Robert Thompson received the maximum sentence of 10 years. In 2000, their case was reviewed, and in June 2001, they were released with new identities and documents. Their current whereabouts, like all other individuals involved in similar cases, are kept strictly confidential. Even their families underwent name changes and relocation.
Aftermath
The Bulger family was devastated by the early release of their son's killers. After the trial and the birth of their second son, James' parents' marriage fell apart, leading to their divorce in 1995. Denise remarried Stuart Fergus, and they had two sons together. Ralph, with his second wife, had three daughters.
