Early Life and EducationJames Mason Crafts was an American chemist born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1839. His passion for chemistry led him to pursue his studies in Germany and France from 1859 to 1865.
Academic Career
Upon his return to the United States, Crafts served as the Dean and Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University from 1866 to 1870. He then joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Professor of Chemistry in 1870 and eventually became the Institute's President in 1898.
Scientific Contributions
Crafts' most notable scientific achievement was his collaboration with Charles Friedel from 1874 to 1891 in Paris. Together, they developed the Friedel-Crafts reaction, a method for synthesizing aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. This discovery significantly advanced the field of organic chemistry.
Other Research
In addition to his work on the Friedel-Crafts reaction, Crafts also investigated organic silicon compounds. He made significant contributions to the understanding of thermometry and the use of catalysts in chemical reactions.
