Biography of James Doohan

James Doohan, a Canadian film actor, was born on March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was the youngest of four children in the family of William Patrick and Sarah Doohan, who immigrated to Canada from Bangor, Northern Ireland, in the 1920s. With his father working as a veterinarian pharmacist and his mother as a homemaker, Doohan's family faced challenges, including his father's alcohol addiction. Eventually, the family moved to Sarnia, Ontario, where Doohan attended high school.

After completing school, Doohan enrolled in a technical college, where he excelled in mathematics and natural sciences. However, his studies were interrupted when he was called to serve in the 102nd Royal Canadian Cadet Corps during World War II. After the war, Doohan pursued a career in acting.

His journey in the entertainment industry began with radio shows on CBC on January 12, 1946. Seeking more opportunities, he studied acting in Toronto and later won two grants to study at Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, where he became friends with Canadian actors Leslie Nielsen, Tony Randall, and Richard Boone. Over the years, Doohan traveled back and forth between Toronto and New York, participating in more than four thousand radio programs and four hundred television programs.

Doohan's talent for mastering various accents became his trademark. During his audition for the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise in the TV and film series "Star Trek," Doohan showcased multiple accents. When asked by the creator of the series, Gene Roddenberry, which accent he preferred, Doohan responded, "Well, if you need an engineer, he'd better be Scottish because (from personal experience), the best engineers in the world are Scottish!"

Initially, Scotty was not intended to be a regular character in the series, but as Doohan worked alongside Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy), Scotty became a more significant and prominent role than initially planned. Eventually, Montgomery Scott grew to become a leading character, Captain James Kirk, portrayed by William Shatner.

Through the lens of Scotty's character, other characters' qualities and ambitions, such as Kirk's ambition and tactical skills, were revealed. The "Star Trek" franchise expanded to include both a television series and several feature films, allowing the audience to witness James's character development, changes in his position, and personal growth.

In terms of his personal life, Doohan was married three times. From his first marriage to actress Janet Young, he had four children: Larkin, Deirdre, and twins Christopher and Montgomery. He divorced Janet in 1964. His second wife was Anita Yagel, whom he married from 1967 to 1972, but they did not have any children. In early 1974, following one of his performances, Doohan met Wendy Brownberger, a 17-year-old fan of his work. They got married in October of the same year and had three children: Eric, Thomas, and Sarah. Sarah was born in 2000 when Doohan was already 80 years old.

Doohan's son from his first marriage, Christopher, followed in his father's footsteps and continued the "Star Trek" legacy. He appeared in the 1979 film and its subsequent reboot in 2009.

James Doohan passed away on July 20, 2005, leaving behind a lasting legacy as the beloved character Scotty in "Star Trek" and a talented actor in the entertainment industry.
