James D. Innes: A Welsh Landscape Painter

Early Life and Education

James D. Innes was born in Wales to John Innes, a Scottish tinplate worker. Along with his brothers Alfred and Jack, he attended Brecon Christ College before studying at the Carmarthen School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Philip Wilson Steer was one of his instructors.

Exhibitions and Artistic Affiliation

From 1907 onward, Innes exhibited with the New English Art Club. He became a member of the Camden Town Group, a collective of London artists. In the summer of 1911, Innes collaborated with artist Augustus John on a painting trip to North Wales, where they created landscapes inspired by the local scenery.

Travels and Health Struggles

Innes later traveled to France and Spain, encouraged by his doctor's recommendation to visit warmer climates after being diagnosed with tuberculosis. Unfortunately, Innes succumbed to the disease at the young age of 27 at a hospital in Swanley, Kent.

Legacy and Recognition

In 2014, a retrospective exhibition of Innes's works was held at the National Museum Cardiff, showcasing his significant contribution to Welsh art.
