Born and raised in Los Angeles, James started practicing martial arts at a young age. Initially, he trained in Korean karate before transitioning to kung fu. He delved into the Five Animals style, among others, to develop his skills for cinema work.
Unorthodox Katas and Recognition
While still a student, James began performing. To promote his dojo, he competed in kata tournaments, but his unique and innovative approach to katas often clashed with traditionalist judges. Nevertheless, his dynamic performances garnered popularity.
Writing for "Inside Kung Fu" and Hollywood Debut
As a recognized martial artist, James joined the magazine "Inside Kung Fu." He penned articles chronicling encounters with renowned masters, showcasing his competitive spirit. His writings eventually caught the attention of Hollywood, leading to his invitation to the film industry.
Roles in "Kung Fu" and Stunt Work
James' cinematic journey began with a role in the television series "Kung Fu." He played various background characters, auditioning for more substantial roles. After "Kung Fu," he frequently appeared as a stunt double, eventually joining the Stuntmen's Association.
Stunt Coordinator and Beyond
As his skills evolved, James became a stunt coordinator at a stunt school. Today, he identifies as an "action star," continuing his work as a stunt performer. He has also worked as a fight choreographer, producer's assistant, and authored books and videotapes on martial arts.
