James Mattis: A Life in Military and Public Service
Born on September 8, 1950, in Pullman, Washington, James Norman "Jim" Mattis is a retired United States Marine Corps general. He is known for his intellect, battlefield expertise, and unwavering commitment to the military.
Early Life and Education
Mattis' father was a merchant marine, and his mother served in military intelligence during World War II. After graduating from Central Washington University with a degree in history, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1972 as a second lieutenant.
Military Career
Over the course of his military career, Mattis gained a reputation for intellectualism and leadership. He served as the commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, the commander of U.S. Marine Forces Central Command, and the commander of the 1st Marine Division during the Iraq War.
Operation Enduring Freedom

Iraq War

In December 2016, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Mattis as Secretary of Defense. Mattis was confirmed by the Senate in January 2017 by a vote of 98-1.
