Samuel Bronfman was a Canadian businessman, billionaire, philanthropist, and the founder of the liquor and spirits company "Seagram." He belonged to the wealthy Bronfman family, one of the richest families in Canada. "Seagram" owned various well-known brands such as Tropicana juices, Chivas Regal, Crown Royal, VO, Calvert, Dewars, Seven Crown, and Captain Morgan rum.
Born as Shmuel Bronfman in Soroki, a small town in Bessarabia, he was one of eight children of Ihil and Mindl Bronfman. When he was a child, his parents, who were tobacco farmers in Soroki, immigrated to the western Canadian province of Saskatchewan. They settled in the towns of Wapella and Brandon, where Samuel's father and older brothers, Abram and Harry, initially worked in the timber supply business. In 1903, they bought a hotel business in Emerson, Manitoba, and within ten years, they owned three hotels in Winnipeg.
In 1924, Samuel (now anglicized to Samuel) independently founded a small distribution company called "Distillers Corporation" in Montreal, specializing in affordable whiskey. In 1928, Samuel Bronfman's "Distillers Corporation" acquired the "Joseph E. Seagram & Sons" firm based in Waterloo, Ontario from the heirs of Joseph Seagram. Renamed as "Seagram Co. Ltd," the company shifted its focus to a wealthier clientele. Under Samuel Bronfman's leadership, it soon became the world's largest distributor of spirits and evolved into a conglomerate that also ventured into the entertainment industry. Seagram owned a controlling stake in Universal Pictures.
The company's headquarters in New York City was located in the iconic Seagram Building (1958) on 375 Park Avenue, designed by Samuel Bronfman's daughter, architect Phyllis Lambert. The Seagram Building is considered one of the most famous examples of international style modernist architecture.
Samuel Bronfman married Saidye Rosner on June 21, 1922. They had four children, who later became successful entrepreneurs and philanthropists themselves. Their children are Elin Mindl Bronfman de Gunzburg, Phyllis Barbara Lambert, Edgar Miles Bronfman, and Charles Rosner Bronfman.
Samuel Bronfman established the "Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Foundation" in 1952, which became one of Canada's largest charitable organizations. He was actively involved in Canada's Jewish community and served as the head of the Canadian Jewish Congress from 1939 to 1962. He was also a founder of the Companion of the Order of Canada in 1967.
In 1971, Samuel Bronfman opened the "Bronfman Family House" at McGill University, housing the Faculty of Management. The building was named in honor of the Bronfman family's significant contribution to the university. The Bronfman family continued to support McGill University, establishing the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada in 1993 and funding the construction of the Seagram Building on Sherbrooke Street in 2002.
