James Garfield Gardiner

Premier of Saskatchewan

James Garfield Gardiner served as the fifth Premier of Saskatchewan from 1929 to 1931. He held the distinction of being the first Conservative to hold the position.

Early Life and Career

Gardiner was born in Ontario and became a successful farmer. He entered politics in the 1920s, joining the Conservative Party. In 1924, he was elected as leader of the Conservative Party in Saskatchewan.

Political Breakthrough

In the 1929 election, the Conservatives gained momentum due to a patronage scandal involving the Liberal Party under Premier Jimmy Gardiner. The Tories won 24 seats, while the Liberals won 28, the Progressives won 5, and independents won the remaining 4.

Minority Government

The Liberals attempted to form a minority government but were defeated in a vote of confidence. This allowed Gardiner to form a United Government, a coalition of Conservatives, Progressives, and independents.

Freemasonry

Gardiner was a member of the Freemasons, a fraternal organization. Freemasonry has a long history in Saskatchewan, and Gardiner's membership reflected his connection to the province's social and political fabric.

Legacy

Gardiner's United Government faced challenges during the Great Depression. Despite this, he played a significant role in Saskatchewan's political landscape. His tenure marked a shift in power from the Liberals to the Conservatives and laid the foundation for future Conservative successes in the province.
