Foxx was born on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas, to Louise Dixon and Darrell. His father was an Episcopal bishop who occasionally worked as a stockbroker. Shortly after Foxx's birth, his father converted to Islam and changed his name to Shahid Abdul. Foxx's grandmother took on the responsibilities of raising him as his parents were rarely involved in his life. Growing up in the black neighborhood of Terrell, Foxx was surrounded by other children who were also left to their own devices. However, he was fortunate to have his beloved grandmother by his side, who had a profound influence on him and earned his endless admiration.
