Biography of Jamie Gillis

Jamie Gillis, born James Ira Gurman on April 20, 1943, in New York City, was an American actor and director in the adult film industry. He gained recognition for his work in over 470 adult films and several horror movies from 1971 to 2005. Gillis was ranked 12th on the "50 Greatest Porn Stars of All Time" list by Adult Video News in January 2002. Additionally, he was inducted into the X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) Hall of Fame.

Gillis attended Columbia University, where he studied acting and even played Hamlet in an off-Broadway production. Despite his initial aspirations in mainstream acting, he turned to posing nude in the early 70s and eventually started earning money through pornographic films. Though he made occasional appearances in non-adult movies, he remained associated with the adult film industry. During his sex shows in the 70s, Gillis would read poetry and quote Shakespeare, which served as a justification in the eyes of the police and allowed his shows to continue.

In addition to his prolific acting career, Gillis directed around fifteen pornographic films and worked as a producer, shooting some of his films in France. He was known for his incredible work ethic and productivity. While Gillis appeared in gay pornography due to his bisexuality, he never engaged in sex with other men on camera.

In 1981, Jamie made a cameo appearance in the Hollywood action film "Nighthawks," starring Sylvester Stallone. From 1989 onwards, Gillis resided in San Francisco. He tragically passed away on February 19, 2010, at the age of 66, in New York City. Gillis had been diagnosed with melanoma four or five months prior to his death.
