Jan Fischer

Early Life

Jan Fischer was born on January 2, 1951, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, into a Jewish family of mathematicians. His father was a scientific researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, specializing in mathematical and statistical applications in genetics and medicine. Jan's mother was also involved in statistics. Following in his parents' footsteps, Fischer graduated from the University of Economics in Prague in 1976, majoring in Statistics and Econometrics. In 1985, he completed his postgraduate studies at the same university, obtaining a candidate degree in economic statistics.

Political Career

Fischer began his political career, if it can be called that, in 1980 when he joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, which lasted until 1989. After the events of 1989 and until now, he remains non-partisan. He worked for a long time at the Czechoslovak Statistical Office, eventually becoming its head in 2003. Since the early 1990s, he led the team responsible for processing the results of parliamentary and local elections. Fischer also worked for the company "Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum," conducting market research. In the spring of 2001, Jan Fischer participated in the work of the International Monetary Fund on the possibility of establishing a statistical service in East Timor. In late January, Fischer made a serious mistake in forecasting Czech foreign trade, which almost cost him his position as the head of the Statistical Office. The then Prime Minister, Vladimir Spidla, who was dissatisfied with his work, failed to have Fischer dismissed.

Acting Prime Minister

After the government of Mirek Topolanek faced a vote of no confidence on April 9, 2009, Fischer, following a consultation with President Vaclav Klaus and leaders of major parties, assumed the position of the interim government of the Czech Republic. He remained in this role until October 2009, when parliamentary elections were held.
