Biography of Jan Hatzius
Jan Hatzius is an American economist of German descent, best known for his "bearish" forecasts even before the onset of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. He has twice been awarded the Lawrence R. Klein Prize for the most accurate American economic forecast over a four-year period. Additionally, Hatzius has received numerous other awards for his precise and meticulous economic forecasting, including being listed in the annual rankings of economists-predictors by publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Institutional Investor.

Early Life and Education
Jan Hatzius was born on December 17, 1968, in Heidelberg, Germany. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. In 1995, he obtained his doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford, under the supervision of renowned British economist and expert in economic forecasting, Stephen Nickell. During this time, Hatzius also spent some time as a research fellow at the London School of Economics.
Career at Goldman Sachs
In 1997, Hatzius joined the management team of Goldman Sachs as a junior economist in the bank's Frankfurt office. He then relocated to New York in 1999. Five years later, in 2004, Hatzius became a managing director at the firm, and in 2005, he succeeded former chief economist William Dudley. In 2008, Hatzius was admitted into the partnership of Goldman Sachs. In 2011, he assumed the role of chief economist of the investment bank and became one of the leaders in global economic and market research, alongside Dominic Wilson.
Personal Life
Jan Hatzius is married and has three children. He resides in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
