Biography of Jan Haviksz Steen
Jan Haviksz Steen (1626-1679) was a Dutch genre painter known for his ability to portray humor and find the funny side of human relationships in his paintings. Steen was born in Leiden and received his artistic training in Utrecht under the guidance of Nicolas Knupfer, in The Hague under Jan van Goyen, and in Haarlem under Adriaen van Ostade. He became a member of the painters' guild in Leiden in 1648.
Early Life and Career
Steen's artistic career was influenced by his experiences outside of painting. From 1654 to 1660, he owned a brewery in Delft, and from 1661 to 1669, he lived in Haarlem. However, in 1669, he returned to Leiden and ran a tavern until his death. These experiences in the brewing and hospitality industries provided Steen with a rich understanding of human behavior, which he later incorporated into his genre paintings.
Genre Paintings
Steen is best known for his genre paintings, consisting of over 500 attributed works. His paintings depict scenes from everyday life, often set in rooms, kitchens, or taverns.
