Early Life and Disability

Born in Hrusice, Bohemia, on December 17, 1887, Lada's childhood was marked by a tragic event that profoundly impacted his artistic style. He accidentally stabbed his eye on his father's knife, leaving him permanently blind in one eye. This disability fostered his distinct graphic style, characterized by a lack of depth perception.

Artistic Training and Development

From 1905, Lada pursued his artistic education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Prague. His style became known for its graphic simplicity and expressiveness, achieved through precise, simplified lines.

Literary Illustrations

Lada's international fame stemmed from his exquisite illustrations for Jaroslav Hašek's "The Good Soldier Švejk" (1924), rendered in meticulous ink work. Other notable literary illustrations include "Triptych with Czech Landscape" (1935), "The Roguish Fairy Tales" (1946), and his memoir "Memories of My Childhood" (1953).
